Being young after finishing university is not easy when trying to get a creative related job. You don’t know what you want to do in life, and if you are not getting a title like, doctor, nurse, or teacher you probably don’t know where can you work or what can you do. At least this is my case.

My name is Laia and I don’t know what to do. I graduated in June 2019 and since then I’ve worked on some projects but I just didn’t know what job was I looking for so I even didn’t know what to search in LinkedIn or Domestika.

I studied Audiovisual Media at University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. I ended up searching for jobs related to video editing and social media. I just found internships wich I couldn’t apply to cause I am not a student anymore or Junior job opportunities that require 4 or 5 years of experience. I was desperate and, to be honest, I still am.

I’ve tried with small projects and they are fine but they were short and they would quickly come to an end. One day I got a big opportunity and I found a job in an SEO Agency but then the pandemic hit the world and I was quicker out after 3 weeks working for them.

with the whole world stopped, what can I do to find a job? I told myself to keep looking for a job and I kept asking myself what do I want to be. I got to the point where I didn’t know what to do cause the word “experience” kept showing off in every single job I tried to apply for.

Being young is not easy. Everyone tells you to get a job, tells you to send appliances but employees always tell you they’ve found someone with more experience or even someone better.

But during this process at least I’ve discovered I can present myself as I visual creative, I also understand that having different skills is good and not bad (cause you're not just one thing) and I’ve also realized I want to learn more about UX design.

Since June 2019 it’s been a year, and some days I feel like I’ve lost this year and that I am not good enough to get a job in my first year after university. But today, Thursday 4th of June, I wrote a job appliance and all these thoughts came to my mind. A few hours later I thought my experience could help others and writing about it can even help me.

Here’s the job appliance I wrote this morning:

Hello,
My name is Laia I graduated in June 2019 in Audiovisual Media (UPF).
You’re probably looking for people with more experience than me and I can understand that. But I’ve got the passion of telling stories in ways others don’t and I’m willing to work doing creative things. What I love about your project, and what has led me to send you this email, is the opportunity to use creativity to help your clients. With this pandemic spreading all over the world and the economic consequences people and companies need to be creative about their missions and the thing about Elespacio is creating concepts to help others tell their story to the world.
I’m not trying to stand out but that’s my honest opinion and being honest is really important to me.
Since graduation, I’ve worked in small projects as a precarious freelancer, not for the job but the conditions. I’ve also worked in a SEO Agency creating stuff for social media but then Covid-19 hit the world and everyone under 3 months in the company was quicker out. I’ve been this whole time repurposing my skills and, at the end, my self. I’ve been working as an editorial designer during the pandemic designing books for children.
I have to admit that when I finished my degree I couldn’t say o explain what I am or what can I do for others. During the last years, I’ve filmed and edited videos, created photography campaigns and documentaries, created magazines, created scripts for movies and series, I have designed campaigns with banners and spots and whatever it was necessary. So I can say that I’ve learned to create stuff, to find different ways to tell a message, to find the correct path through knowing what does the audience care about, and what does the company what to give to the world. It’s been a journey and it hasn’t ended yet. Now I want to learn more about UX design not just for webs or apps but for getting better in creating stuff that can help users and, at the end, people. I know I probably talk too much sometimes but this is why I consider my self a visual creative and that’s why I think I can feet as a Visual designer in your company.
I know I’m not the perfect person to join your team but I willing to do it so I can learn from all the great things you do.
I’m sorry for the long text above and I’m really thankful if you’ve read it all.
Laia.
